About Me

A mix of D.I.Y. and a budget mindset fueled my coffee journey. Thirty years ago, making drip with pre-ground store-bought coffee turned to whole bean arabica with a blade grinder. Wow—a leap forward in flavor! Experiments with french press, pour-over and steam espresso followed.

Then an entry-level burr-grinder showed up at the thrift store, and - Wow! - another leap forward in flavor. Then a pump espresso maker, a cold brew setup, and eventually a conical burr grinder.

And then came the fateful day an entry-level coffee roaster popped up for sale in the secondhand market. WOW!!! - perhaps the biggest leap forward in flavor!

Ten years and three roasters later, I now use a 2Kg drum roaster with robust computer software, and have a commercial-quality grinder. I know the coffee “rabbit hole” can go on forever, but am at a place where I’m confident to share my coffee with others who appreciate an excellent cup, and enjoy brewing their own.

Yes, my coffee truly is better!

It tastes better, without question.

Coffee is at peak freshness day 2 to two weeks after roasting (it should ideally rest, or off-gas for a day following roasting). It will taste good longer than that, if stored properly. That said, most store-bought and chain coffeeshop coffee has been on a pallet in a warehouse far beyond the freshness window.

It’s better for the environment.

The pod and K-cup brewing systems that seem to be everywhere generate a disturbing amount of plastic waste. Disposing a paper coffee filter, or grounds-only, is readily compostable (soil and worms love it)!

Additionally, my preferred distribution method does not involve single-use plastic or coated coffee bags—or any bag at all. My goal is to meet you in person to give you your custom-roasted coffee shortly after roasting via canister exchange - where I’ll either fill your re-usable canister, or simply exchange your empty one for a full one. That’s about as local as “shop local” gets!

Last, my coffee is better for the economic environment. I source single-origin beans, either in a direct trade arrangement with producers (like I’ve been able to find with a farming co-op in Honduras, called Elevar - see photo), or from suppliers that use a Fair Trade designation to ensure producers receive fair wages.

A few details:

I typically have half a dozen different countries of origin on hand at any given time. Usually some Central American, South American, and African. Stock rotates fairly frequently, as I and my customers like exploring new flavor profiles. I charge $20 per green pound, regardless of origin, unless a specialty coffee is requested, which we will explore together. Customers who do not either bring their own canister or join the canister exchange program will be asked to pay an additional $2 bag charge after their third purchase.

A pound of fresh-roasted coffee (where you can select the origin and roast of your choice) is where most customers get started. The Custom Coffee Canister is the next step, when you want to maintain your coffee at peak freshness, in style! (A pound of fresh-roasted coffee is included with the purchase of The Canister.)
